Mt.
High Picnic
at
Sellwood Park
August 26, 2023 (Saturday). Our
annual picnic was attended by only 23
club members, which is only about 10%
of our club members. Still, it
was a very pleasant day at Sellwood
PArk. This year, we had the
option of having grilled sausages in
three varieties: smoked, spicy, or
super spicy. Plus whatever else
people brought to this potluck lunch.
Prior to the picnic, 9
people participated in a n option bike
ride up and down the Willametter
River, between Sellwood Park and the
Steel Bridge in Portland. On the
way there, we also crossd the
pedestrian Tilikum birde and then back
again across the Hawthorne bridge.

Oregon
Trail - Barlow Road bike ride
Barlow
Pass to Welches
August 19, 2023 (Saturday).
The Oregon Trail (Barlow Road) history
tour by bicycle went very well this
past Saturday. Only 9 people
participated. A few more were
interested but couldn't do it on this
date.
We planned to cross
highway 26 only two times, once at
Government Camp and once at Zig
Zag. But, instead, we managed to
cross the highway only once - on a
marked pedestrian crossing in Zig Zag.
Also, people seemed to
like the section of Barlow Road that
we did between Rhododendron and Zig
Zag, as well as riding on some paved
roads between Zig Zag and Welches to
completely avoid the noise on highway
26. A late lunch at the Chicali
Cantina was great.
Thanks to Brenda Ackerson
and John Davis for the photos.
Emilio also contributed a photo or
two.

We
have reached the end of the
old highway, where it was cut
off by the newer highway 26.
We
are looking down at the new
highway. Laurel Hill is
the light colored hill on the
other side.
Unfortunately,
Laurel Hill is inaccessible
from here. A pedestrian bridge
across highway 26 is needed
here.

the blasting a few years ago
when ODOT widened highway 26,
very little is left of

here. Just a narrow path.

Columbia
River Gorge bike ride
Ellowah
Falls to Viento State Park
July 22, 2023 (Saturday).
Eleven of us participated in this bike
ride, organized by John A. Davis. This
ride had several smaller hills and one
big hill along the way. 7 of us
had electric bikes and 4 had standard
(non-electric) bikes. Everyone
made it. There were lots of
great views along the way and lots of
variety, from sunny open spaces to
cool shady forests.
The path from
Elowah Falls led us right next
to I-84 for a little while.

Triple
Crown bike ride
July 9, 2023 (Sunday).
This was a hilly ride, suitable for
e-bikes but strenuous for anyone on a
regular non-electric bicycle.
So, only 5 of us showed up. Five
of us had a an electric bike, and one
person (Paul) did it all on a light
but non-electric bike. This ride
was organized by John A. Davis. The
"triple crown" consisted of Stonehenge
tower, Council Crest tower and Pittock
Mansion. We started the ride and
ended it at the east end of the
Sellwood bridge.

Ski
the Glade Trail Day
March 4, 2023. The first
Saturday in March is the Glade Trail
Day, a tradition for almost 20 years.
It is organized by the Mt. Hood
Museumin Government Camp, in
cooperation with Timberline SKi Area
and the Forest Service.
Participants use shuttle buses for
transportation up to Timberline, and
then they ski the whole 3 miles of the
Glade Trail down to Government Camp.
This is how people skied before there
were any ski lifts. This is the
only day of the whole year that the
Glade trail is groomed and patrolled.

Mt.
Shasta & Mt. Ashland ski
trip
March 17 - 19, 2023. A
drive to trip, everyone driving their
own car or carpooling. At Mt. Shasta
Ski Park, some of us skied the newly
opened terrain on Gray Butte.
Not everyone went there, because
access to it is difficult. It
involves either skiing a steep and
ungroomed hillside or taking a long
walk with a steep uphill at the
end. At Mt. Ashland, some
of us witnessed the ski patrol setting
off explosives at the top of The Bowl,
to prevent avalanches.

Snowvana
November 19-21,
2021. (Friday -
Sunday)
This year, Snwovana was held at The Convention Center.
After 3 years of existing separately, this year the Ski
Fever Show and Snowvana merged into one. Snowvana
has now grown from 2 days to 3 days and it incorporates
a large Ski Swap. The largest retailers in the
Portland area had a large presence.. Also, the 3
largest ski areas on Mt. Hood were present, as well as
Silver Mountain (Idaho), Hoodoo, and Mt. Ashland.

brought in some magic, including knights -- or
was it vikings?
