November 18 - 20, 2022.
(Firday - Sunday)
The NW Ski Club Council had a booth at
Snowvana, representing all the local ski clubs
in Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.
Several of our club members volunteered to
staff the booth for a 2-hour shift.
Also
present in their own booths were the PACRAT
racers, the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol and Ski Hosts.
Ski
areas represented were Timberline, Skibowl,
Meadows, Hoodoo, Brundage Mt. and Tamarack.
There
was also a large ski swap, and several local
ski shops were there, including Next
Adventure, the Mountain Shop, and Hillcrest
Sports.

October 24, 2022.
(Monday) Over 60
people attended our annual Season Kickoff
Party. People renewed their membership
and received new membership cards. Some signed
up for trips. Some were looking for a team to
participate in PACRAT racing.
We
also held club elections. Bill King was
voted in as our President. Debbi Kor
became our Vice-president, Nancy Pratt
remained our Treasurer, and Michele Gunness is
still our Secretary. All the other
appointed positions remain the same as before.

The
Dalles Bike Ride
October 15, 2022.
(Saturday) Ten
members and two guests enjoyed a ride on the
Gorge Discovery Trail from The Dalles to the
Gorge Discovery Center Museum on October
15. The weather was perfect: sunny, warm
(but not too warm) and no wind. The
paved trail travels along the Columbia River
waterfront, passing by a historical site (Rock
Fort), past Indian fishing platforms,
beautiful waterfront businesses, both Google
plants, coves, lakes, a tunnel underneath a
train track, and a winding uphill to the
Discovery Center. The downhill on the return
swoops through the grassy hillside with views
of the Gorge. We stopped for lunch at
the Bargeway Pub, right alongside the trail
and right on the river.

Grand
Trolley Trail Tour
October 1 and 2, 2022.
(Saturday and Sunday)
Harry Scribner offered to guide us on this
tour both on Saturday and Sunday. 11
people showed up on Saturday and another 7
showed up on Sunday.
The
basic tour consisted of riding from Milwaukie
to Oregon City and back. On Sunday, an
extension was offered to do the northern part
of the Trolley trail and ride all the way up
to Tilikum Crossing bridge and then back to
Milwaukie.
The
ride was mostly flat, but with some gentle
undulations in the terrain. We had lunch
at the 14th Street Food Cart pod in Oregon
City. We also visited the arch bridge,
where live music was being performed and there
views of the waterfalls on the Willamette
River.

Kelley
Point Bike Ride
September 24, 2022.
(Saturday) Only 8
of us showed up for this wonderful bike ride
to the confluence of the Willamette River and
the Columbia River. We started from the
NE corner of Kenton Park in North
Portland. We rode our bikes along a
paved trail closely following the Columbia
Slough. Along the way we saw a woodpecker,
several egrets, and some ducks. The
sandy beaches at Kelley Point park were quite
a surprise.
We
ended the day with lunch at the Casa Maya
Mexican restaurant, just 2 blocks from Kenton
Park, and we also visited a statue of Paul
Bunyan just a block from the restaurant.
Overall, it was a very pleasant day.

Timberline
- Trillium Lake - Still Creek - Rhododendron
bike ride
September 10, 2022.
(Saturday) We combined two
previous bike rides into one: Timberline to
Government Camp plus Govy to Trillium Lake and
then down Still Creek Road to Rhododendron. It
was a total of about 24 miles, but most of it
downhill. 14 people participated. At
one point we actually had 15.
A few people from our club urged us to
reconsider and maybe cancel this bike ride
because of alerts received from PGE about high
winds and dry air and high temperatures that all
combine to create a fire hazard. In fact, PGE
had cut off power to both Government Camp and
Welches to prevent any possible sparks that
might ignite a forest fire. But it turned out
that all this created more alarm than
necessary. We had a great day, and there
was no need to cancel it.
The day started off really cool, with the
temperature around 50ºF. And there
was bit of a breeze in the wide open
Timberline parking lot, probably not more than
about 10 - 15 mph. As soon as we ducked
into the forest, we were protected from even
that little bit of wind. By the time we
got to Government Camp or Trillium Lake, we all
started shedding our outer clothing layers
because it got warmer, but it never got really
hot. Most of our ride was in the shade of trees.
Maximum temperature later in the day was around
77ºF.
All along Still Creek Road, there was
practically no wind at all. No leaves were
moving even high up in the canopy. The
only sign of somewhat unusual weather was that
Mt. Hood was enveloped in a haze.
Both Huckleberry Inn and Charlie's Pub were open
because they both had their own power
generators. We stopped at Huckleberry for
a leisurely breakfast or snack. Some had a
huckleberry shake, others a huckleberry pie, and
some even a full breakfast of eggs and ham.
Trillium Lake had people bathing in it. We
just rode our bikes part of the way around the
lake.
After a long descent down Still Creek Road,
where we crossed Still Creek several times (over
bridges), we arrived in Rhododendron. We
then carpooled back up to Timberline to fetch
our cars.
The Chicali Cantina was closed due to lack of
power. Se we all drove to Sandy and had
lunch there at the Bigfoot Growlers
Restaurant. It was a very pleasant
day. We concluded that it's a good idea to
always end a bike ride with some socializing
over a nice meal.
Our next bike ride will be just 2 weeks from
now. We'll ride to Kelly Point, where the
Willamette River joins the Columbia River.

(Saturday) Our annual
picnic and bike ride was a pleasant
affair. 14 people showed up for the
pre-picnic bike ride along the Willamette River,
where we also crossed the relatively new
pedestrian Tillikum Crossing bridge.
Approximately 25 people came to the picnic in
Sellwood Park. As usual, the club provided
grilled sausages, both spicy and
non-spicy, and the rest was a potluck.

Oregon
Trail (Barlow Road)
bike ride
July 23, 2022.
(Saturday) Twenty people signed up for
this fun and educational bike ride, but only 19
showed up. We followed the route of the Oregon
pioneers' wagons as well as the old Mt. Hood
Loop highway (which is now mostly abandoned,
decommissioned, and partly destroyed. We heard
the ghost of Perry Bickers speaking from his
grave ad telling us how he was killed. We
saw one of the most beautiful views of Mt.
Hood. We saw the horse tunnel -- which
some have nicknamed "the bat cave". And we ended
the day with lunch at the Chicali Cantina in
Welches, which says on its web site that they
have "Seriously good food" and "Epic
Margaritas".

End
of Spring Season
One last day at Timberline
May 24, 2022.
(Tuesday)
One last day of skiing before the end of the
Spring season. A group of us skied at
Timberline. The Palmer chair was finally
open. It normally opens in mid-April, but
this year it opened in the second half of May.
Mainly because it kept snowing throughout April
and the first half of May.

Madras
Bike rides
May 21,
2022.
(Saturday)
We had 2 bike rides on this day, both starting
from Madras, Oregon. Four of us went on a
mountain bike trail in the Madras East Hills. At
the same time, 8 of us went road biking on the
Madras Scenic Bikeway, through the towns of
Metolius and Culver and then on to the Cove
Palisades State Park, with several overlooks
with great views of a reservoir where the three
rivers meet: the Metolius, Deschutes, and
Crooked River.
Make sure to scroll to the last pictures in this
series, which show the alternate mountain
bike route as well as the camping
at Pelton Park.

Spring Adventures
April 16
- 17, 2022.
(Saturday)
A rare sunny day this April. Almost a foot
of new snow had fallen, but very little of it
stayed on the eastern rim of Little Zig Zag
canyon. Most of the new snow was blown
away by the wind.
Despite
recent snow, the eastern side of
Little Zig Zag canyon was full of
rocks, some exposed,
and
some covered with just an inch or two
of snow. A lot of the new snow
was blown away.

This
year, our Spring adventures were
limited. The Magic Miles was
often closed due to fog,
and the
Palmer lift, which usually open around
mid-April, did not open until the end
of May.

Whitefish,
Montana trip
March
13-20, 2022.
(Sunday - Sunday)
This was a very flexible trip, where poeple
could stay for 4, 5, or 7 nights. 48
people participated. We got several foggy days
at Whitefish. In the middle of the trip,
on Wednesday, some of us took a day trip to
Blacktail Mountain and had a great powder day
there, along with some intermittent sunshine.
AT Whitefish, the resort had moved the chairlift
that takes people out of Hellroaring
canyon. The lift was moved probably about
half a mile to the side and also moved quite a
bit higher, thus making it easier for advanced
skiers to do laps in Hellroaring canyon.
Some new trails have been cut, but the terrain
is still very steep.

Blacktail
Mountain, Montana trip
March
16, 2022.
(Wednesday)
Some of us on the Whitefish trip took an
optional day trip to Blacktail Mountain. We had
good weather there, partly sunny, and lots of
untracked good powder. Blacktail has two
adjacent hills, served by a total of 3
lifts. The longest lift on the larger hill
has a mid-station, used mainly to load the
chairs with skiers who only want to ski the
upper mountain, where the snow is better,
lighter, and drier.

Ski
the Glade Trail Day
March 5,
2022.
(Saturday)
This annual event on the first Saturday of March
is the only day of the year that the Glade Trail
is groomed all the way from Timberline to
Government Camp, a total of over 3 miles.
It is also patrolled and shuttle buses are
provided to return to Timberline. This is
a living history experience, skiing the way
people used to ski before Timberline Lodge was
built. It is also a fundraiser for the
Mt. Hood Museum and Cultural Center.
It is a very popular event and it sells out
every year. Usually a maximum of about 70
tickets are sold. They include breakfast,
lunch and après
ski happy hour with door prizes. Plus unlimited
shuttle bus rides to Timberline.

Snowvana
November
19-21, 2021.
(Friday - Sunday)
This year, Snwovana was held at The Convention
Center.
After 3 years of existing separately, this year
the Ski Fever Show and Snowvana merged into
one. Snowvana has now grown from 2 days to
3 days and it incorporates a large Ski
Swap. The largest retailers in the
Portland area had a large presence.. Also,
the 3 largest ski areas on Mt. Hood were
present, as well as Silver Mountain (Idaho),
Hoodoo, and Mt. Ashland.
