Columbia
River Bike Ride
From
The Dalles to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center
and back
August 9, 2020. (Sunday)
We did this same ride twice
before in recent years. This time, there were two
differences:
- Instead of having lunch at a restaurant in The
Dalles at the end of the ride, we had a picnic lunch
at the end of the paved bike trail behind the
Discovery Center. Everyone brought their own
food and drink.
- We maintained a safe distance between us and wore
face masks when we were not riding or eating.
It was a beautiful sunny
day. A total of 11 people participated. Everyone
had a good time.

Ski
the Glade Trail Day
Living
history ride from Timberline to Government Camp
March 7, 2020. (Saturday)
Our last few events before
the corona virus pandemic forced an end to our ski
season were all held on this weekend: the Glade
Trail Day, Ski to Defeat ALS,
Ski & Ride for the Cure (Hope on
the Slopes), and the Oregon Cancer Ski Out.
We only have pictures from the Glade Trail Day.
The Glade Trail Day
is an annual event, held from the year
2003. It is a living history experience, giving
us a taste of what skiing was like in the 1920s and
1930s, before there were any ski lifts on Mt.
Hood. In those days, all trails started from
Government Camp. People had to climb up the hill,
usually up to the 6,000 foot level - where Timberline
Lodge is now located, and then skied back down.
The difference now is that
we have the luxury of shuttle buses to take us up to
Timberline. Also, this is the only day of the year
that the Glade Trail is groomed and patrolled by the
Mt. Hood ski patrol. Included in the event are
breakfast, lunch, and a happy hour with door
prizes. The event is organized by and benefits
the Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum in
Government Camp. Put this event on your bucket
list and participate next year.

Panorama,
Kimberley, and Fernie
plus
an optional day at Kicking Horse
Feb. 22 - Mar. 1, 2020.
Our longest trip of the
season. A total of about 9 days. Most of the the
trip was centered around Panorama, in British
Columbia. Fernie and Kimberley were visited for
one day each on the way there and back. Plus, an
optional day at Kicking Horse was arranged for those
who wanted it. This trip was led by Karen
Michels.

Whitefish
Ski Trip
with
optional day at Blacktail Mt.
Feb.
8 - 15,
2020.
This was our most flexible
trip ever. People could fly, drive their cars,
or take the train. Approximately equal numbers
of people chose each of these options. People
could stay fro 4, 5, or 7 days. Almost every
day, or every other day, someone new would arrive. A
total of 42 people participated, but only 8 people
went on the optional day trip to Blacktail Mountain,
even though we had plenty of room for at least a few
more in our cars. This trip was organized by Bill
King.

Jan. 27 - Feb. 2,

We have been visiting
Silver Star for the past 4 years in a row.
This was our 5th visit. It's a great place for
ski-in/ski-out lodging. Just get out of your lodge and
step into your bindings. This trip was led by
Karen Michels.

49º North, Mt.
Spokane, Bluewood
January 17
- 20 , 2020.
Three ski areas in three days. We
experienced the best of both worlds on this trip,
from fresh powder to sunshine. We had
excellent light powder at 49 Degrees North on the
first day. At Mt. Spokane, the powder was still
ight, but it had stopped snowing and we even got some
sunshine. At Bluewood, on the last day of the
trip, we had partly cloudy and partly sunny skies and
the groomed snow was great, but the ungroomed powder
had solidified and got heavier.
There
was also lots of entertainment on the bus, including
our trip leader wearing funny hats, and almost all our
dinners were included in the trip price. This
trip was led by Emilio Trampuz.
For
a summary of the whole Washington ski trip, see this

Day
2: Mt. Spokane
Perfect balance of fresh powder,
semi-blue skies, and great visibility. We
skied the new back side and loved it. And we
visited the famous Vista House at the top of the
mountain, which was encrusted in ice and looked
like an ice castle from a fairy tale.

Day
3: Bluewood
Bluewood has usually greeted us
with fresh powder on our past trips
there. But this time, it was more of a
groomers day. There were periods of
light clouds, and periods of sun. Visibility
was perfect. We didn't take any
pictures there, just trying to get the most
of the day. Many people skipped lunch
because we wanted to leave early, by 2 pm,
in order to get home at a reasonable hour
that same evening.
Two
tables were reserved for the
"Oregon ski club". That
was us, of course.
But
many people didn't even see
this sign because they didn't
stop for lunch.

Happy Hour
Vintage Movie Outtakes
December 28, 2019. (Saturday)
History Happy Hour is a
monthly event on the last Saturday of each
month. You can buy a beer, a glass of wine, or a
soft drink at the entrance, and then enjoy a
presentation. This month, Lloyd Musser (the
Museum's curator) presented several vintage ski movie
outtakes. Every shari in the room at the museum
was filled.

Early
Skiing on Mt. Hood
January 12,
2020.
Snow was late in coming to
Skibowl, which didn't open until after the new
year. But, once it came, it came in
droves. The whole Northwest has been pounded
with snow for a couple of weeks, with one more week of
snow in the forecast, until about January 18 or 19.
The weekend of January 11 -
12 was stormy, by not everywhere and not all the
time. Mt. Hood Meadows was closed temporarily on
Saturday, due to high winds. High winds were also
forecast for Sunday and Monday, with gusts of up to 80
mph.
But not at Skibowl, at
least not on Sunday morning. Several of our club
members stayed home because of the forecast. But
the few of us who came anyway found that there was no
wind at all at Skibowl between 9 am and noon.
And highway 26 was completely free of snow, with bare
pavement until about 3 miles before Skibowl.
The mountain often
creates its own weather, and you can never tell how
it will be until you come and see for
yourself.
This was a
good day! Emilio, Keith, Kurt,
and Malcolm having fun at Skibowl.

December 15 - 31, 2019.
This season began with low
snow levels, below average, and the snow came late.
Some of our members hit the slope for the first time
on Sunday, December 15, .... and after a period of
rain and then more snow, we hit the slopes again on
December 22, and then again on December 28. Here
are a few photos from different people.

High Kickoff Party
November 7, 2019. (Thursday)
About 50+ people attended
our annual Kickoff Party. There was free pizza and
salad. Several people won door prizes, ranging
from ski hats to Mountain High gift certificates for
$30 - $40. Also, as usual, people renewed their
club memberships, picked up their membership cards,
and signed up for trips and/or for PACRAT racing.
Overall, it was a nice turnout and the room was
pleasantly filled. But 50 out of over 250 club
members is only 20% of our members. Where were
the others?
Debbi
Kor - our president - made several
announcements.
Also,
our trip leaders said a few words about
the upcoming ski trips.

Warren
Miller Movie + Dinner
October 12, 2018. (Monday)
Sandra
Smith organized this event, as she has been doing
for many years now.
About
60 people participated in the group purchase of lift
tickets, and about 25 of them showed up for dinner
and/or drinks before the movie. The 2019 movie
is called "Timeless".
This
year was the first time that the raffle for door
prizes was done online, digitally. Instead of
a paper form to fill out, an image projected on the
big screen instructed people to use their
smartphones to go to the Warren Miller Entertainment
website, fill out the form there, and the names of
the winners were almost instantly drawn from those
entries and the winners were announced at the end of
the intermission.
