This page shows you a glimpse
of what the club has done during the past
year, starting in October. Our year
runs from October 1st to September 31 of
the following year.
NOTE:
This year is not typical. Because of
the COVID pandemic, we have been doing
fewer trips and fewer activities than
usual. If you are new to the club,
check out some of the previous years
to see what our club does in a
tyupical year.

Kayak Pend
Oreille River Water Trail Trip
Report
from Kurt Wilke
Aug. 23
- 27, 2021. (Monday -
Friday)
Thirteen
of
us visited northeast WA to
explore the northern portion of
the Pend Oreille River Water
Trail. The river flows north
into Canada to meet the Columbia
River. This portion of the river
has 2 dams, Box and Boundary.
Our base camp was Edgewater
State Campground near Ione, WA.
We had 3 paddle days and we
explored a different portion of
the river each day. My guess is
that we paddled 6 to 8 miles a
day. We were very fortunate that
the weather cooperated with us.
We had sunny weather and no
smoke from the wildfires. The
nights were chilly and the days
were very warm and no bugs to
speak of too.
Day
1 we launched from
the boat launch in our
campground. We kayaked
downstream to within a mile of
Box Canyon Dam. We saw Osprey,
Eagles, and turtles. Paddled
back to the boat launch for
lunch. Some of us then continued
upstream to Ione to explore the
river a bit more.
Day
2 required a shuttle
as we paddled from Box Canyon
Dam to Metaline. It was a
pleasant float. Stopped part way
to have lunch. There were
bear and deer tracks on the
beach we stopped at.
Day
3 we drove to
Boundary dam to launch. It was a
bit windy so our paddle upstream
was against the wind and what
little current there was. Made
it easier on our way back
though. 233 foot PeeWee Falls
was a short paddle from our
launch point. It was pretty
impressive. We paddled a few
more miles upstream. Interesting
rock formations and checked out
one of the boat only accessible
campsites. On the way back to
Boundary dam the water level had
gone down enough where we could
limbo into one of the caves with
our kayaks. That was really
cool.
After
the
paddle, some of us took a tour
of the Gardner Caves, a 500
million year old limestone
cavern. After the tour a couple
of our group walked the quarter
mile to the Canadian border.
We
ended
the day with a pizza party at
our camp.
This
short
description of our trip really
doesn’t do the trip justice. It
was a wonderful trip and worth
doing again.

Moniquea, Nancy, and David at base
camp.

Salmon
River West Hike
July 30,
2021.
(Friday)
It was a
great hike - good weather and very
enjoyable company! A moderate
7.8 miles hike along a trail that
follows Salmon River through old
growth rainforest, then climbs to a
great viewpoint of the vast Salmon
River canyon.
Thanks to
Michele Gunness and Sally
Niedermeyer for organizing this
hike.

Burnt
Bridge Creek Trail bike ride
& Backyard BBQ at Debbi's
July 24,
2021.
(Saturday)
Our
bike ride and BBQ at Debbi's was
fantastic!
The
ride on the Burnt Bridge Creek
trail through Vancouver,
Washington, is unique and
beautiful. Pity that only 8 people
showed up. Some stayed away
because of the forecasted high
temperatures in the low 90s, but
most of the trail is in deep shade
of old growth trees, and there was
a light breeze, so it was actually
quite pleasant.
Thanks
to Harry and Lisa
Scribner for showing us
this wonderful place.
The
BBQ with salmon and spicy sausages
in Debbi's back yard was
wonderful. People brought side
dishes and salads, and many
brought desserts. The 31
participants had a wonderful time.
It was great seeing some familiar
faces in real life after a long
period of COVID isolation. One new
member joined us (Welcome
Gerald!).

Highway
Cleanup
June 26,
2021.
(Saturday)
This event was supposed to happen on June 5, but
we got rained out. So, the 8 people that
showed up decided to have a brunch at
Huckleberry Inn instead, and we rescheduled the
highway cleanup for June 26.
Unfortunately, only 4 people showed up this
time. It was a hot day, but not too hot
during the morning hours. Violet found some
money, just like the first time she participated
in this cleanup. The first time, she found a $20
bill. This time it was just some
coins. Violet is now officially the
luckiest highway cleanup person among us!
We do this twice a year. Our adopted section of
the highway is between milestones 51 and 53 just
west of Government Camp.

Trillium
Lake bike ride
June 20,
2021.
(Monday - Wednesday)
A very pleasant bike ride. We covered
about 12 miles and had a picnic at the
amphitheater by the lake. We expected
about 10 people, but 2 cancelled at the last
minute, so only 8 of us participated in this
ride.
On the way back from the lake to Government
Camp, we followed a mountain bike trail that
we've never done before as a group. It was a
pleasant trail, and we determined that it's
easier to follow it from the lake northward
rather than toward the lake (southward).

Mission
Ridge Ski Trip
February 22-24, 2021.
(Monday - Wednesday)
Thirty people signed up for this trip, even
though it was the most unusual ski trip we have
ever done. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
on this trip, we only arranged for a group
discount at the Cedars Inn in Wenatchee, but
everyone had to make their own
reservations. Also, everyone had to make
their own lift ticket purchase and
reservations. Mission Ridge is part of
both the Powder Alliance and the Indy Pass, so
anyone who had either of those passes could ski
for free here.
On Monday, very high winds caused the shut down
of the whole ski area.
On Tuesday, it was still a bit windy, but the
wather kept improving, with lower freezing
elevation and some sunshine, which was minly
noticable at the base area and on the chair 4
terrain.
On Wednesday, we had a beautiful sunny day with
nothing but blue sky.
At
the bomber wing, Steven Rice
proposed to Debra Malin.
She said yes. Scroll down to see a short
video of it.
The snow was excellent, especially at higher
elevations.
